Oyster shells are piled up on a boat, with the Bay in the background.
Oyster shells hosting juvenile oysters, known as spat-on-shell, are piled on the deck of the Poppa Francis on the way to the Tred Avon River Sanctuary for the Oyster Recovery Partnership near Oxford, Md., on July 18, 2022. The oyster shells came from Horn Point Oyster Hatchery laden with baby oysters, known as spat, in order to seed a reef constructed on the Tred Avon, one of ten Chesapeake Bay tributaries targeted for oyster restoration under the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement.
