In the early 60s we saw many entertainers at Carrs beach.. Sandy point came about (for me) in the mid to late 60s..Really miss the area.. we moved to Ga in 1973:slightly_smiling_face:
Thanks for helping us amplify this history which had been ignored, erased or buried Davy Jones Locker.

I visited my sisters & brothers who live in Annapolis, An I was suprised to see that Sparrows Beach is now a gated community.
Thank you for this interesting information.
Had been going to sandy point most my life. If you heard about a concert coming you go to cares or sparrow beach. White people weren't allow. Funny though, you would see them looking and swaying to the music. Loved sandy point then but have not been in a few years. 74yrs.
Just got a job transfer there. This is a good history lesson and an appreciated one. SMH though. God’s grace!
Thanks for the history lesson. It helps me to appreciate the beach experience even more. The fact that family members in the past couldn't enjoy the natural environment around them due to discrimination is a sad chapter in our nation's history. Remember our country promotes freedom, but people of color were denied many opportunities in the past.
Wow, not sure if this should be taken as a warning... as a tourist, I can't believe this is a necessary mention. Thank you.
What happened to Porter's New Park. I went there with my parents until 1990?
My kids love Sandy Point and it’s the only beach I’ve really gotten to know as a (20 year!!) transplant to the area. This article is fascinating and really enriches the experience of walking in the footsteps of people who literally made history!
Well, I finally solved the many year riddle of how we ended up at Sandy Point. In the beginning, my dad would take us to Carr's and Sparrow's beaches exclusively. Then one day, we started going to a new beach all the time. Dad called it incorrectly Sparrow;s Point. He meant Sandy Point. One day, I waded through the sewer marsh at the end of the beach because I heard people through the marsh. Low and behold , it was a sea of white people. As far as the eye could see. Terrified, I ran back to my Dad and told him what I had seen. He laughed and said, "Go play, I m eating. I was so impressed by your article, I though your readers might like this little diddy of a story.
Thank you!
