The American eel (Anquilla rostrata) was selected as one of the important species and a fishery management plan devised for the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries so that harvest does not exceed the capacity of the population to maintain its stock size from year to year

Under the Chesapeake Bay Agreement, signed by Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, DC, the U.S. EPA and the Chesapeake Bay Commission, Atlantic croaker and spot fish were selected as important species and a fishery management plan (FMP) was scheduled for completion by December 1991.
