    Stewardship Goal Team (GIT5) Meeting 2024

    Monday, September 23, 2024 from 10:00am - 3:30pm

    This will be more than a meeting. Let’s venture outside of our normal spaces, learn together, and get energized. The day will include guest speakers from Anacostia Parks and Community Collaborative and Ward 8 Woods Conservancy, a short, guided walk in the woods to see the results of community stewardship and access to greenspace, lightning updates on what workgroups are doing, and lots of interaction and conversation about the power of inclusive multiple-benefit efforts.

    Purpose:

    • Experience, witness, and consider the powerful, meaningful impact that can be achieved by connecting land conservation, access to nature, education, programming, stewardship and attention to equity and inclusion.

    • Infuse new perspectives, spark ideas and inspire discussion around how all of our different lines of work intersect, and how we can increase our collaboration and coordination toward more collective, strategic impact.

    • Get outside, talk with each other, connect.

    • Explore how to increase benefits across multiple outcomes by pairing needs and priorities of the community with CBP environmental conservation efforts.

    Format: This is primarily an in-person meeting, but all indoor portions of the meeting will be available for virtual participation.

    ACTION ITEM: Please use this Google form to register to attend ASAP, so we can plan appropriately for space at the museum. Those who register will receive meeting materials and further details as needed.

    Important Logistics:

    • Lunch: Bring your own lunch. We wish for the lunch break to be a time for networking, idea sharing, and/or exploration of the museum. There are no facilities to chill or heat food.

    • Dress: Wear sturdy shoes for our woods walk-and-talk. Please dress for the weather, i.e., raincoats in case of rain, casual attire encouraged.

    • Parking/Public Transport: The museum has ample free parking. The museum is also accessible via the W3 bus line from Anacostia Station (on the Metro Green Line). The museum is not within walking distance from Anacostia Station.

    • Security: Please arrive promptly at 10:00am, participants will need to go through museum security and all bags will be checked.

    Hybrid Logistics: Indoor portions of this meeting will be hybrid accessible.
    • The morning session will run from the opening of the meeting at approximately 10:00 am until we transition outdoors with Nathan Harrington at roughly 11:45 am. The hybrid session will then reconvene after lunch from 1:30 pm until 3:30 pm

    Webinar: Advancing Watershed Restoration Through Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice

    From 2018-2020, the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Diversity Workgroup worked with the independent consultant Skeo Solutions to develop a tailored Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) Strategy for the Chesapeake Bay Program partnership. As part of this work, Skeo Solutions completed a comprehensive cultural readiness assessment of the partnership, provided three cultural humility trainings, as well as tools and resources that the partnership can use after the conclusion of the project. Come learn about the finalized DEIJ Strategy, implementation tools and resources now available for CBP partners, and how you can get involved with advancing watershed restoration through DEIJ.     Meeting Objectives • Celebrate the signing of the CBP DEIJ Statement and discuss how our workgroup could support CBP leadership in meeting timebound commitments in the DEIJ Action Statement. • Hear from leadership of the CBP Principals’ Staff Committee (PSC) on the new DEIJ Statement and accompanying DEIJ Action Statement. • Hear an update on ongoing projects and efforts to meet actions in our 2020-2021 workplan. • Learn about the new Chesapeake Bay Environmental Justice and Equity Dashboard. • Discuss what a DEIJ indicator could look like in the UMCES Chesapeake Bay Report Card. • Share updates and announcements during a round robin.

    ***This meeting will now be held remotely via Zoom*** Meeting Objectives • Learn about local efforts that are engaging underrepresented stakeholder groups in watershed restoration activities. • Reflect on the Taking Nature Black Conference. • Hear updates and discuss opportunities with the Chesapeake Bay Gateways program. • Review actions that came out of our presentation to the Management Board last month. • Review and discuss full results of the 2019 Diversity Profile and revisit our target of 15% people of color in leadership. • Discuss priority actions and goals for the next two years of our work. • Share individual updates and announcements during a round robin.

    Diversity Workgroup Meeting - Petersburg, Virginia June 2017

    We are excited to announce the Diversity workgroup’s community-driven panel and workplan discussion! The workgroup facilitated a similar discussion last November in Baltimore, MD. The June 13th meeting will be held from 10-4 at Virginia State University’s L. Douglas Wilder Building, Carter G. Woodson Avenue Petersburg, VA 23806 Petersburg, Virginia, one of the older colonial cities of the commonwealth-state, has a population of a little under 32,500 citizens. About 23 miles south of Richmond, Petersburg is located at the fall line of the Appomattox River, which is where the Piedmont region and Atlantic coastal plain meets. Virginia State University, a Historically Black College/University founded in 1882, is one of Virginia's two land-grant institutions, and is located 20 minutes south of Richmond. Virginia Tech and Virginia State University started the Virginia Cooperative Extension, a collaborative designed to help sustain profitability of agricultural and forestry production, while protecting and enhancing the quality of our land and water resources. At this workgroup meeting, extension specialists for one of the projects under the partnership, the Harding Street Urban Agriculture Center, will be present. During this meeting, we plan to listen to community leaders explain the water quality/water infrastructure issues that are impacting local communities of Virginia, the larger Chesapeake Bay Watershed, and how these issues impact food security, sustainable agriculture and public health within underserved/underrepresented communities. We hope you attend in person and are able to take full advantage of the breakout sessions and networking opportunities. We will have a conference line and adobe connect primarily for those in parts of the watershed who cannot attend due to travel limitations.     Diversity Workgroup Listening and Working Session

    We are excited about hosting the November 2nd community stakeholder listening session and diversity workplan discussion! Please review the attached agenda and coordinate arrangements to attend. The November 2nd meeting will be held from 10-3 at the Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center, 1000 Frankfurst Ave Baltimore, MD 21226. Masonville Cove Directions The Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center is located on the historic Masonville community and serves as a learning center and gathering space for efforts related to restoring the surrounding communities, socially and environmentally. At this meeting, we are planning to hear what's important to local Baltimore communities as well as communities across the Bay watershed, in hopes to gain better perspectives about the work we have committed to embark upon.     Black History Month Event: Taking Nature Black and Green Jobs Fair
